What happens when I convert an animated GIF?

The first frame of the animation is saved as a still PNG image. PNG files created here are not animated.

Will the colours improve in PNG?

The colours stay the same as in the GIF, because a GIF only contains 256 colours. The advantage is that PNG lets you add more colours when you edit it.

Does the GIF transparency carry over?

Yes. Transparent pixels in the GIF are transparent in the PNG.
